Cheryl Ford Interview

January 4, 2009

The Detroit Shock's Ford looks stunning in person!!

When the Detroit Shock won the 2008 WNBA Championship for the third time in six years, something was missing.

That something was Cheryl Ford. The 6-3, 198 pound, daughter of The Mailman was recovering from a knee injury.

I caught up with her as she was watching the Detroit Pistons take on the Washington Wizards.

She was looking stunning as she sat courtside all alone. Our conversation went like this:

What brought you out to the game tonight?

I just came out to support (The Pistons). I have a couple of friends on the team and I love the game of basketball so whoever is playing then I’m gonna watch.

Does watching the guys ever help you to work on your game to see things that you can get better at?

Kinda sorta. I watch Rasheed a lot because he’s pretty good down in the post. I wish I had the long range there but I’m working on it.

What was the exact type of knee injury that you suffered?

I tore my ACL in July. I had surgery in August so I have to more months to go.

What are you gonna bring back to the Detroit Shock? You know they just won the championship without you on the court.

I’ve been here for six years and I have three rings so I don’t know. They did it without me this year so we’ll see what happens. I think I’m only gonna make the team better with the rebounding, which is what I do and play defense.

Do you feel as though you have any extra to prove because you missed last season?

Yeah, I just wanna play healthy. Oh my god! It’s been like two years in a row but yeah just hopefully I play healthy.

Being from Flint, I have been fortunate enough to know people who know Deanna Nolan. Can you elaborate on her for a moment and what does the team expect from her?

Oh my god, she’s amazing! I think she is very underrated. I think she can be MVP of this league any year and we all tell her that all the time that we think she just stops herself. When she gets down or in her little mood where she doesn’t want to play, than she just stops herself. I think by far, she is the best in the league.
