A Western Michigan University graduate from Flint, Woodyard is a sports reporter for the Flint Journal. At WMU, he worked for the Western Herald for three years and produced his own blog, “Flintstone TV,” with exclusive web content and videos, including coverage of Detroit Pistons games for the SLAM magazine’s website. His most memorable story, he says, was covering Allen Iverson’s first home game in a Piston’s uniform. A Wade McCree scholar and member of the National Association of Black Journalists, Woodyard has freelanced sports features for various publications, interned at WJRT-TV 12 in Flint and at Public Media Network in Kalamazoo. He received hands-on experience at the community station in digital and analog video production, play-by-play announcing at local high school sports contests and editing with Final Cut Pro. The journalism major expects to graduate in December. Says Sue Ellen Christian, WMU associate professor of journalism: “His ambition and excitement for the craft stand out among the scores of students I’ve taught over the years.” She also supervised Woodyard’s WJRT internship. “He embraces how today’s technology can help him tell stories in different ways, yet he also had the age-old gift of knowing how to make a source want to share his or her story.”
